I viewed “The Google Gamut:Everything you need to get started.” The video was by Kern Kelley but it was listed under Darren Kuropatwa’s name. Regardless, it was in the “Getting Started” category because I am still getting started!
Kelley’s main points are how to use Google to get started on incorporating technology into your teaching as well as your life. He pointed out that there are many FREE resources via Google and then gave step-by-step instructions on how to set up a Google account and then add “stuff” that you can use. I found the video very helpful and it has spurred me on to make Google my homepage so that the many options offered are readily accessible. (Right now I am having to constantly go to my gmail inbox to get access to some of the tools for this class.)
One feature I plan to check out is google.docs. I have seen two student teachers using powerpoints via google.docs. Now I know how to access them. The google.docs can also be set up like a wiki so you can share your work with others and invite to “read only” or edit and improve. Readers, blogs, wikis, templates, calendars, web pages…it’s all there.
Darren made it look SO EASY and quick to set up and get started. He also pointed out that some people are concerned about the security of “cloud computing” – working and storing online. He feels that the risk is worth the reward and I have to agree with him. I also learned about a new feature called “google gears” that you can add to your browser. If for some reason you can’t get access to the internet this feature still allows you access to your documents offline and then when you do go online it will update the work you have done.
The online, anytime delivery is very valuable. I think it is especially helpful for those who are training and encouraging teachers to use these tools. The trainer can find specific relevant topics to present to teachers in 20 minutes or less. That saves a lot of time and money rather than sending teachers to all day or weekend conferences. It’s also great for my own professional development since I can attend anytime and view videos that I am interested in.
